In early May 2005, in a poor neighborhood near the Ngong Forest in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, two children reported to have heard an infant’s cries. When the locals searched, they were surprised to find a newborn girl abandoned in the Kenyan forest who was saved by a stray dog that ‘apparently’ carried her across a busy road and through a barbed-wire fence to a shed where the dog had nestled her with her litter of puppies.

Aftermath

According to Aggrey Mwalimu, the owner of the shed where the baby was discovered, the newborn girl was clad in a tattered shirt and wrapped in a dirty plastic bag when the dog found her. The 7-pound, 4-ounce infant was taken to a hospital and was doing well later. She was named “Angel” by the hospital workers. Gakuo, the hospital spokeswoman said that the baby had been abandoned about two days before the dog discovered her. “She cried a lot during admission, because her umbilical cord was infected. She is now very quiet. She just feeds and sleeps. I was there this morning and she looked at me and yawned, looked at me again and yawned,” she said. The mixed-breed dog was named as “Mkombozi,” or “Savior” by Animal welfare officials and was given its first bath and de-worming.

Newborn babies are often reported abandoned by mothers in Kenyan media, the reasons stated as poverty and the inability to care for the child. However, one good thing that happened in the above case after the publicity on the way the baby was rescued by a dog is it sparked a lot of public interest to adopt the child.

This incident seems to be confused with another similar case in 2008 where a dog sheltered a newborn baby boy who was abandoned by his 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina.
