The Deathly Stoop Chair of Thomas Busby

In 1894, a chimney sweep sat in the chair during a night at the pub. She’s said to have been found the following morning hanging from a pole beside Busby’s gibbet post or ‘stoop’. Locals also said during the WW2, Canadian airmen from the nearby base at Skipton-on-Swale visited the pub. Those who sat in the chair never returned from bombing missions over mainland Europe. In 1967, two Royal Air Force pilots sat in it, and while driving back from the pub, crashed into a tree and died. A few years later, two builders sat in it out of challenge, and within hours, the one who sat in it fell to his death from a roof. A cleaner who stumbled into it while mopping, later died of a brain tumor. Likewise, people also linked some fatal accidents in the 1970s with sitting in the chair.
In 1978, after a Vicar declared the chair ‘Evil’, landlord Mr. Earnshaw donated it to Thirsk Museum in England. He put up condition the haunted chair should hang from the ceiling so no one can sit in it again.
