Analysis:

The claim is that a dead Brazilian boy sat up in his Coffin at his own Funeral, and then died again. According to a Brazilian news website, two-year-old Kelvin Santos sat up in his coffin and asked for water before laying back dead again.

The Incident

As reported by ORM.com.br, Kelvin Santos stopped breathing during treatment for bronchial pneumonia at a hospital in Belem of Northern Brazil. After he was declared dead at 7.40pm on 1 June 2012, his body was handed over to his family in a plastic bag.

The next day morning, before an hour of his funeral, the boy apparently sat up in his coffin and said, “Daddy, can I have some water?” Explaining the incident, the boy’s father, Antonio Santos said, “Everybody started to scream, we couldn’t believe our eyes. Then we thought a miracle had taken place and our boy had come back to life. Then Kelvin just laid back down, the way he was. We couldn’t wake him. He was dead again“. When the boy’s father Santos rushed his son back to the Aberlardo Santos hospital in Belem, the doctors reexamined the boy and confirmed he did not have any signs of life. Apparently, according to Kelvin’s aunt, the boy repeatedly “appeared to move” during an open-casket wake the previous night.

Not convinced with the doctors, for what they had seen and heard of the boy, the family delayed the funeral for an hour — hoping he would wake up again. But when that did not happen, the boy was buried at 5pm that day in a local cemetery.

Investigation

Expressing his worry about the death of his son, Mr. Santos explained, “Fifteen minutes after rushing him away for resuscitation, they came and told me he was dead and handed me his body. Perhaps they didn’t examine him properly. Dead people don’t just wake up and talk“. Believing that his son was a victim of medical malpractice, Mr. Santos registered a complaint with the police who launched an investigation. However, on 6 June 2012, the local state department confirmed that the boy was admitted to hospital in a critical condition and was declared dead after cardiac-respiratory failure.

Similar Case

On 3 April 2012, a similar case occurred in Argentina. Analia Bouter gave birth to her baby daughter three months premature, and was pronounced a stillborn (born dead) in a hospital in Resistencia city. The baby was sent to a morgue in a coffin. After nearly 12 hours, when her parents opened the coffin to say their goodbyes, the mother fell to her knees in shock when she found her baby alive in the coffin — trembling. The family planned to sue the Hospital Perrando in Resistencia for malpractice.

In cases like these, it could be the fault of medical staff – not to examine or treat the patient properly. Medical profession is an honorable one, as it can save lives, so it is important that doctors and all medical staff do their duty efficiently at all times.
