These messages doing rounds online say that one World Trade Center is making strange, eerie sounds when the wind passes, and the New Yorkers believe it could be haunted by the victims of 9/11. Yes, it is a fact that such eerie sounds were reported by few New York residents in lower Manhattan, but those are not related to any ghosts or 9/11 victims.

Since 2012, there were a series of reports and videos about these strange, eerie sounds supposedly coming from one newly constructed World Trade Center building, claiming the tower is haunted by the 9/11 victims who died in the Twin Towers of the original World Trade Center. The whistling and wining ghost-like sounds were especially heard by the people in the lower side of Manhattan — on a high windy day. The video here shows one such recording. The strange phenomenon came into public limelight in November 2013 when a New Yorker Kenny Cummings recorded the sounds and reported to the Tribeca Citizen, saying:

“I live a couple of blocks from the tower, and first heard this very eerie sound during Hurricane Sandy last year. I’ve heard it only once afterwards, sometime last winter. I assumed once the building’s framework and windows went in, the airflow would be redirected. At 3.15am Wednesday, I awoke to the sound. It was slightly different in timbre, with two tones this time. I couldn’t be sure what it was at first, but after a moment I realized it was the Trade Center…I’m sure all of downtown hears this—it’s unmistakable and very chilling.”

Natural Explanation

Although the sounds reported were strange and haunting, there were natural explanations to it. The new one World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, is the tallest building in America with 1,776 feet in height including its spire. The wind howling among such buildings is actually a natural occurrence. Post the reports, Fox News investigated the story and explained the strange sounds that were scaring the New York residents for couple of years.

When the Fox News team contacted the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on this, they said that they are aware of it, and that there is no confirmation that the eerie sound is coming from the tower itself. There were numerous other buildings on the 16 acre site, most of which are still under construction, and the sounds can come from any of those on a high windy day. Some other people have also mentioned that the noises are coming from open windows that apparently produce a wind tunnel effect. As explained in the Fox News report in above video, the strange and eerie sound, for the aforementioned reasons, ‘appears’ to be coming from One World Trade Center. Note that there can be some online videos of fabricated sounds that attribute this natural phenomenon to ghost haunting, and of course that of the 9/11 victims.
