Fact Check:
An interesting video is viral online alleging to show a miraculous scene at Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. It appears to show rain showering only on one main Idol of Lord Nataraja, not on other surrounding idols. Accompanying messages in different languages suggested it is Goddess Ganga showering rain on Lord Shiva in sacred Kartika month. The Hindu temple is dedicated to Nataraja – Shiva as the lord of dance. Despite popularity of the video, the claims as such are not true and explained here.
Rain Shower Only on Nataraja Temple Idol?
The video appeared online around 17th November 2020 and became viral because of the unusual claims. It was in fact raining extensively in the Chidambaram town of Tamil Nadu from few days earlier. However, there are no credible news reports about the unusual claims. The temple is a famous one, so any such incident would have easily attracted public attention and media channels.
The video appeared on YouTube channel ‘Media Namba‘ on 17th November 2020 with title “Chidambaram – Natarajar Temple Rain Status Video“. Tamil news channel Thanthi TV reported about the ‘miraculous’ event at Chidambaram Nataraja Temple. It mentioned devotees were amazed to see the rain showering only on top of the dancing Nataraja statue outside the temple. Few online outlets picked up the story and that is how the story became viral.
No Miracle
Firstly, you can observe and hear the heavy rain sound clearly in the video. Another video also appeared online around the same time showing the rain scene from the temple area in Chidambaram. Although the time of shoot may be different, you can notice rain showering in surrounding temple area also – not just on the idol.
Rain in surrounding area, enhanced appearance in lighted area
You can observe light drizzle outside the temple area and it appearing more clearly in the far area above the Nataraja idol – under lights. So, what we see in the video is in fact the effect of light and angle of shoot from a distance in turbulent weather. Notice the light on the Nataraja statue is offset when compared to the other statues. It is possible someone who saw the video is unaware of these logical reasons and called it a miracle. Considering the changing colors of the sky in the grainy recording, we also cannot rule out the possibility of some effects added to the video.
