Analysis:
A photograph in circulation online since few years comes with a claim that it is taken by a NASA Astronaut and that it shows a huge, black Triangular UFO from Space. No, it is not a fact!
The triangular shaped black object in space is often shown as UFO (although not extra-terrestrial) and notably, the picture and the UFO story is most often used to link to other stories and websites related to UFOs and Aliens. As suggested in the story, the photograph indeed comes from The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth, a government website operated by NASA at the Earth Sciences. It is in fact a photo taken on 12 Jan. 1986 during STS-61-C, the seventh mission of Columbia space. The original link to the photograph is taken down now, but can be seen in web archive of eol.jsc.nasa.gov. It is a NASA photo site with no explanation, which is why the current stir. The same image can be seen in other link of NASA’s Photos Database Record here. Nonetheless, as described in yet another NASA related photo database website images.jsc.nasa.gov, the picture only shows a small piece of thermal insulation tile floating in space near the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-61C). Space debris also including small, unsecured objects that are sometimes released in space can be misinterpreted as unidentified flying objects (UFOs).
So clearly, the messages saying NASA astronaut snapped a photo of a triangular UFO in space are hoaxes.
