This “China dragon fossil” has a pair of horns above its head and its shape resembles the legendary animal often described in books and stories. It was recently exhibited in the Xinwei Ancient Life Fossils Museum in Anshun, Guizhou.
Dragons have often appeared in Chinese legends and apparently, Chinese people are often called the “descendents of the dragon”. For a long time, scientists (and me) thought that the dragon was a fictional animal existing only in stories.
The China dragon was a reptile animal living in the ocean in the Triassic Period about 200 million years ago. It was an amphibian. It spent most of its time living in water, although sometimes it walked on land. In which case, it sounds like it didn’t fly and couldn’t breathe fire. Not the same – never mind.

When archeologists first stripped the clay off the fossil, they found the dragon had a pair of horns above its head and the shape of the dragon was very like the legendary animal often described in books and stories.
Dragons have often appeared in Chinese legends. The dragon with two horns on its head is regarded as a totem. The totem was first invented by Chinese ancestors and worshipped by the Chinese people. Therefore Chinese people are also called the “descendents of the dragon”.
For a long time, scientists thought that the dragon was a fictional animal existing only in stories. The dragon fossil was found in Guanling County, Anshun City, in 1996, and has been kept in a good condition. It is measured 7.6 meters long. Its head is 76 centimeters long and the neck is 54 centimeters long. The body is 2.7 meters in length and 68 centimeters in width, and the tail is 3.7 meters long.
The dragon’s head is in a triangle shape. Its mouth is 43 centimeters long. The widest part of the head is 32 centimeters long. The horns project from the widest part of the head, and are symmetrical and 27 centimeters long. They are a little bit curved and tilted, which makes the fossil look very much like the legendary dragon.

Analysis:
The couple of pictures appearing online with various stories attached to them claim to show Dragon Fossils found in the Xinwei Ancient Life Fossils Museum in Anshun, in Guizhou province of China, or that they are found frozen in a cave in Romania. The stories, as such, are not facts.
The claims that the pictures show “ice preserved” fossils of a Dragon, exhibited in a Chinese Museum are not facts, they are actually shots from a documentary fiction called “The Last Dragon“. It is an educational fantasy movie made in 2004 by Animal Planet in association with the BBC, which portrayed – what if dragons actually existed. Later, this movie was even available in other forms like TV show, and had other names in US and UK like “Dragon’s World: A Fantasy Made Real” and “Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real“. Moreover, the “Xinwei Ancient Life Fossils Museum in Anshun, Guizhou” does not really exist. Some versions of these stories were in fact meant for promoting the movie and TV show based on the mythical dragons. Animal Planet created the documentary movie, where in these mythical dragons were brought to life, and they also explained the ‘magic’ behind the created scenes.
So the pictures that come with the aforementioned stories do not show real dragons, they are simply creations of art and fantasy, made for a documentary movie and TV shows. Another story appearing online in various versions and with many pictures claims that a “White Dragon” was discovered and shot dead in West Malaysia by an Orchard owner in mid-2014.
