Some stories doing rounds on social media and other online outlets claim that Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has Died of Heart Attack. The claims gained significance as Arun Jaitley is undergoing some treatment lately.
Origin of Claim: Arun Jaitley Died
Reports about Arun Jaitley’s death appear to have originated from a Hindi article on Satya Khabar website satyakhabar.in published on 26th May 2019. The ‘breaking news’ article said India’s Finance Minister Arun Jaitley died of heart attack during sleep and doctors could not save him. The article also added an official announcement on it would come out soon. However, there’s no such information in any credible news outlets.
66-year-old Arun Jaitley was in fact admitted to AIIMS to undergo tests and treatment for an undisclosed illness, but was discharged on 23rd May 2019. He did not attend celebrations at BJP headquarters after their victory in general elections. Jaitley’s health has declined ever since he underwent a kidney transplant at AIIMS earlier in May 2018. In January 2019, he also underwent a surgery in the US for a reported soft tissue cancer in his left leg. As of this writing, reportedly, the doctors treating him have advised Jaitley to go to the US or UK for treatment. Despite the condition, the finance minister is very much alive and somewhat active on his social media accounts. On Twitter, he paid tributes to Veer Savarkar on his birth anniversary.
After rumors about his death went viral, Principal Spokesperson of Government of India Sitanshu Kar posted a message on Twitter clarifying Arun Jaitley’s health condition. The probable source of the death hoax, Hindi article on Satya Khabar website was also taken down later.
Update: 24th Aug. 2019
On 9th August 2019, Arun Jaitley was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He complained of breathlessness and restlessness. A multidisciplinary team of senior doctors treated him for weeks. Unfortunately, the honorable Member of Parliament and former Finance Minister of India passed away on 24th August 2019.
