Fact Check:

According to certain stories and pictures that went viral on social networking sites like WhatsApp and Twitter, BBC has Declared Top 10 Most Corrupt Political Parties in the World in 2017, and that Indian National Congress holds 4th position in that list. One version of the picture also showed that it was CNN that declared the top 10 most corrupt political parties in the world. Quite a number of people bought the story and it was also shared on Facebook and few other websites online. The fact of the matter is that the story is not true, and is explained below.

Origin of Claim & Actual Facts

On 17 March 2017 BBC News Point website bbcnewspoint.com published an article listing and describing top 10 most corrupt political parties in the world. Top on the corrupt parties list was Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML). Soon after, images circulated that it was BBC that declared the corrupt parties list. It should be noted, the information was not coming from the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) news website; BBC News Point is no way associated with them. After the story became popular on social media, an Editor for BBC Online said on Twitter that BBC never does such surveys on corruption in political parties. Looks like the CNN version is a later fabrication, again pointing Indian National Congress as the “fourth most corrupt political party in the world.”

The information provided in the article on BBC News Point website (misused BBC name) did not explain on what basis the parties have been declared corrupt. There are no details about any such survey, and notably, some of the political parties in the list, like Nationalist Fascist Party of Italy and Nazi Party of Germany, do not even exist now. The website has been publishing many such ‘Top 10’ lists without any credible sources of information. Moreover, as of this writing, the BBC News Point website’s domain name and URL have been changed to The Daily Mail News, which again perhaps is misuse of yet another news source Daily Mail.

So the claims that BBC/CNN has declared top 10 most corrupt political parties in the world in 2017, and that Indian National Congress holds 4th position in the list are hoaxes; they originated from an article having no credibility.

Hoax.
