An audio tape of telephonic conversation is viral on social media alleging to show Congress Councillor in Kargil, Zakir Hussain makes some anti-national comments amid India-China standoff. Accompanying messages also say the conversation shows the real character of Congress. The Congress party councillor appears to support China and abuse Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Yes, the audio is real and in fact belongs to Zakir Hussain, who was expelled from Congress party for the objectionable comments.
About the Audio of Congress Councillor Zakir Hussain
The leaked audio tape is a Hindi conversation between his friend and Zakir Hussain, a Congress party Councillor from Shakar Constituency in Kargil district of Union Territory Ladakh. Mentioning the India-China standoff in Galwan Valley, the friend asks him to come over to his place joking it may lead to war. Zakir Hussain says nothing is going to happen there, adding half of the Leh region should be given to China. He then abuses Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He goes on to saying Ladakh UT will break into thousand pieces and they will get back Article 370 (special status to Jammu and Kashmir). The friend then mentions China foreign minister saying he will free Ladakh from India within a month, and asks (laughing) Zakir Hussain what will happen to Kashmiris then. The Councillor finally replies we will send Kashmir to Pakistan.
Congress Party Response
On 19th July 2020, MP Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal shared the full audio on Twitter saying – the real face of traitor & anti national ideology of Congress Party can be judged through its elected Councillor of Congress Party in Kargil (Zakir Hussain). He also shared a copy of press release from District Congress Committee, Kargil in UT Ladakh. The notice distanced Congress party from the issue saying it is private telephonic conversation between Zakir Hussain and his friend.
The Congress party notice condemned the content of the audio and issued show cause notice to Hussain – to clear his position on the matter. Consequently, Ladakh Congress President Rigzin Jora expelled the long-time Congress activist from the party without waiting for his response. As a result, Zakir Hussain was arrested on 20th June 2020 for the ‘highly objectionable’ comments on India-China standoff in Galwan valley of Ladakh, where 20 Indian soldiers were killed. In the meantime, he submitted a public apology saying it was a private conversation with friend, adding he said it all without meaning them literally.

Anti-National?
Although he said he did not mean it literally, the anti-national and ‘pro-China’ conversation of Zakir Hussain became viral on social media. Many netizens condemned the controversial comments thereafter. The BJP MP Namgyal also slammed Congress party terming it the ‘Real face of traitor & anti-national ideology‘.
