Fact Check:

A picture doing rounds on WhatsApp comes with a story claiming to show Police Aiming Gun at Farmers Protesting in Delhi, India. It is shown as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s action against helpless farmers protesting for their rights. The fact of the matter, however, is that the picture is an old one not related to farmers protest in Delhi.

About Farmers’ Protest in Delhi

Starting in late September 2018, thousands of farmers conducted a protest march ‘Kisan Kranti Padyatra’ from Haridwar towards Delhi. Their demands included loan waivers and reduction in electricity tariff among others. The protest turned violent when the farmers trespassed the barricades set up by Delhi Police. Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd. After some negotiations with Government officials, the farmers ended their march at Delhi’s Kisan Ghat in the early hours of 3rd October.

Not Police Aiming Gun at Farmers Protesting

The picture in question actually shows an old man holding brick in one hand and a stick in other. Standing opposite is a police official aiming gun at him. As reported by Indian Express website indianexpress.com, the picture shows an aftermath of 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, which happened in neighboring Meerut district. Section 144 was imposed in the area earlier, after the communal riots in Muzaffarnagar. On 29th Sep 2013, a large number of villagers gathered in Khera for a mahapanchayat banned by the administration and clashed with police forces. Police had to lob teargas shells and open fire in air to control the situation. The scene in the picture comes from that incident.

So, the picture of the old man holding a brick and stick opposite to a police official aiming gun against him is not related to the farmers’ protest in Delhi. The claim that the picture shows Police aiming Gun at Farmers Protesting in Delhi is therefore a hoax. The picture also appeared and circulated on Twitter with similar misleading captions against Indian PM Narendra Modi.
