Fact Check:

A message popular on social media purports to show a very rare Picture of Nehru, Indira Gandhi, her Father-in-Law Yunus Khan and Husband Feroz Khan. They all appear to stand together posing for the old, black and white photograph. Although the picture is real, it does not show Indira Gandhi’s husband and father-in-law.

Not Picture of Indira Gandhi with Her Husband and Father-in-Law

Indira Gandhi’s husband is Feroze Gandhi and her father-in-law is Faredoon Jehangir Ghandy. Both of them are not in the photograph in question.

The people in the picture are Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Nicholas Roerich and Mohammad Yunus Khan in the same order. Nicholas Roerich (October 9, 1874 – December 13, 1947) was a revered Russian painter, writer, archaeologist, theosophist, philosopher and public figure. He dedicated much of his life and work to the Himalayas. Mohammad Yunus Khan (26 June 1916 – 17 June 2001) was an Indian diplomat and member of Indian Foreign Service appointed by the Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. He was a close aide to Indira Gandhi.

The old, black and white picture is from 1942 when Nicholas Roerich visited India and lived at his house Roerichs Estate in the hills of Naggar in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. Roerich received Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Indira Gandhi along with Mohammad Yunus Khan. In those days of war, the Russian artist and the future Prime-Minister of India discussed the fate of the new world. They talked about triumph of Freedom and Culture and dreamed of close collaboration between Russia and India.

So, the men in the photograph are clearly not Indira Gandhi’s husband and father-in-law. While one is Indian, the other is Russian artist.
