Analysis:

A story appearing online with couple of pictures talks about a 600-pound Australian woman supposedly giving birth to a huge 40-pound baby and has caught wide attention of netizens. Another version of the story says a 550-pound American woman has given birth to a 35-pound baby at a Texas hospital. No, the claims are not facts.

About the Pictures

According to website oddee.com, the picture of the huge baby actually shows a girl child of Tatyana Khalina named Nadia, who was born in the Siberian city of Barnaul on 26 September 2007. Interestingly, Nadia was the couple’s 12th child, but she weighed 7.75 kg (17.1 lbs) after birth. The second picture that comes with the story indeed shows 23 years old, 600-lb morbidly obese woman Christina, as described in mail Online website dailymail.co.uk.

Origin of Stories

The story about the 600-pound Australian woman giving birth to a 40-pound (18 kilos) baby originated from a 14 Jan 2015 article on World News Daily Report website worldnewsdailyreport.com, which says the baby, was born at Perth’s King Edward Memorial Hospital, and mentions it as a record breaking weight. The source of information is said to be a report from the ‘Western Australian Herald’ newspaper, which as a matter of fact, does not exist. Moreover, no Australian newspaper has published such a story. World News Daily Report is simply an entertainment website that publishes satirical and fictional content, as mentioned in their disclaimer information. The second version of story about a 550-pound American woman giving birth to a 35-pound baby at a Texas hospital originated from a similar article on website nymeta.co published on 4 June 2015. Again, as mentioned in their about information, NY Meta is just an entertainment-purpose satirical publication. In past, they published a hoax story saying a Monster 57 lb Toad was caught eating neighborhood pets in New Mexico.

The article in World News Daily Report website also (wrongly) states that the largest recorded baby in the world was previously thought to be a South African baby who is believed to have weighed 38 pounds (17.2 kilos) and was born in 1839. As of this writing, according to guinnessworldrecords.com, the heaviest birth was a baby boy born to a Canadian woman Giantess Anna Bates on 19 January 1879 at her home in Seville, Ohio, USA – the mother herself being 241.3 cm (7 ft 11 in) tall. The baby boy, who was not officially named, weighed 9.98 kg (22 lb) and measured 71.12 cm (28 in), but unfortunately died 11 hours after birth.

So the stories that a 600-pound woman has given birth to a 40-pound baby in Australia and a 550-pound woman gave birth to a 35-pound baby at a Texas hospital are simply hoaxes that originated from entertainment based satirical publications.
