Analysis:

The message circulating through social media sites warns people in India not to drink 7UP Nimbooz because a new virus HBF is spreading from it, which causes High Bone Fever. The source of information is said to be a certain Dr. Bajaj from AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, India). Let us analyze the origin of these claims along with their authenticity.

Many Versions

These messages warning about the high bone fever virus have been around since at least May 2010 and are circulating in various versions, through SMS, chain emails and other social media sites. Other variants over the years warned that the HBF virus is spreading through Cauliflower (phool gobhi), packed drinking water & ice, and even Panipuri (a popular street snack) in India.

Truth

The fact of the matter is that there is no medical term called HBF, and no such illness called “high bone fever”. When the story went viral in 2010, the manufacturing company of 7UP Nimbooz, PepsiCo India consulted experts to check if there is any grain of truth in it. AIIMS rubbished the claim and denied issuing any such warning, saying ‘high bone fever’ does not exist. 7UP Nimbooz is a lemon-based (nimbu-paani) drink made from purified water, nimbu juice, sugar, and commonly used safe and permitted food ingredients and preservatives. The company said Nimbooz is safe to drink for any consumer, also mentioning another fraud SMS/email saying Nimbooz causes infertility in women.

Therefore, the messages warning people about HBF virus in 7UP Nimbooz, cauliflower, packed drinking water & ice, or even panipuri do not stand valid; no such virus exists. While sharing such baseless rumors creates unnecessary fear among public, note that sometimes such a technique is used to bring down the popularity of a particular product.
