Analysis:
The story that went viral on social media sites comes as a warning to internet users claiming that a 9-year-old boy killed his parents, because as a punishment they took away his internet access by turning off WiFi. Although many readers bought the story, thankfully, it is not a fact.
Origin of Story
The claim in question originated from a 23 June 2016 article on News 4 KTLA website news4ktla.com that was published with the same title as story. According to it, the boy’s parents turned off the Internet for punishment, so he could not play his online games or communicate through apps on his tablet. Infuriated at this decision, the 9 year old child supposedly shot his parents to death. However, no such story was reported in any mainstream news outlet. Moreover, as reported on ABC News website abcnews.go.com, the picture of crime scene showing a home guarded by couple of police officials dates back to a Sep 2012 incident when a Virginia man was believed to have killed his wife and two sons in a murder-suicide at their home in Virginia.
For the good news; the horrific crime described in the story and the aforementioned source article never happened – News 4 KTLA website has been publishing fake, crime stories as local and national news. For example, earlier they published another fake article with the title saying a ‘Mother Arrested After Tattooing Her Son And Attempting To Trade Him For Drugs‘.

Many parents who believed in the story went aghast and expressed the need to monitor WiFi access and the games kids play. Despite being a hoax, the story was widely shared by parents on Facebook and other social media platforms because of what it says about kids these days – that they don’t get enough discipline.
