Analysis:
Various stories shared through SMS and on social networking sites like Facebook say that ex Indian President, scientist and administrator, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is unwell and hospitalized from two weeks, but no media is interested. No, they are not facts.
Not Hospitalized
News about Dr. Abdul Kalam’s ‘deteriorating health’ and ‘admission to a hospital’ have been circulating online since mid October 2014. However, during the time, Dr. Kalam was in Dhaka, Bangladesh, participating in the 110th founding anniversary celebration of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The rumors are thought to be triggered off from a SMS that went viral on Facebook. Dr. Kalam’s absence from his No 10, Rajaji Marg residence in New Delhi is thought to have fuelled the false claims of his hospitalization.
The office of Dr. Abdul Kalam has clarified that the former President is absolutely fine, and is at work. Putting an end to all the speculations, Dr Kalam himself tweeted on 22 October falsifying the messages saying he is hospitalized:
Som msg is bein circultd dat Im unwell & hospitalized! This is totally FALSE.Im bsy workin with severl commitmnts. Plz pay no heed2such rumor
Frequent Target
The missile man of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam has been a frequent target of such rumors about his health. This year in May 2014 too, there were messages doing rounds saying he was unwell. Moreover, earlier in March 2011, Dr. Abdul Kalam was ‘declared dead‘ by a section of media when they got confused with the death of Hafiz Saleh Muhammad Alladin, a renowned astronomer, who was one time educational adviser to the former President.
Looks like these rumors originate from a past incident in November 2013 when Dr. Kalam was in fact hit by high fever and flu, and was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi. Nonetheless, as of this writing, the former President of India has been healthy ever since.
Fabricating and spreading false messages like this is never a good idea, especially when it is about a renowned personality like Mr. Abdul Kalam.
