A message doing rounds on social media sites, also in many Indian languages like Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Guajarati and Malayali warns mobile users not to accept a late night call from a 9 Digit Phone Number 777888999, saying it will transfer a Virus that will Blast your phone. It’s said that a lady will speak to you on the call saying it’s the last call for you, and that 10 people have already died lifting the call. To make the warning appear more authentic, it is also said that the death call warning has been telecasted in a public television. But nothing to worry, the death scare message associated with a 9 digit phone number call is just a hoax.

As stated in the message, generally it is not possible to physically hurt someone with just a phone call. Back in 2011 similar rumours were spread by text messages in Nigeria, warning that several people have died when they answered calls with the ID 09141. “Technically, it is not possible for such a thing to happen. It is therefore unimaginable that somebody will die while receiving a call,” explained Reuben Muoka, a spokesman for the Nigerian Communications Commission. In the current case, Hindi TV Channel ABP News approached a cyber expert about death calls from phone number 777888999. He explained 9 digit phone numbers did not come in India and clarified the warning messages are not real.
