This message showing a completely black lion photo has been circulating widely through emails and social networking sites, especially on Facebook. However, it is to be noted that it is not an original black lion photo, this picture is created by digital manipulation of colors over an image of a white lion which is photographed at Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. Yes, white Lions do exist. The white color of lions is a genetic abnormality which is unique to the Timbavati region of South Africa. However, they are considered to be extinct in the wild because of over-hunting. Completely black, i.e a melanistic lion might exist theoretically, and may be present omewhere, but is not recorded officially yet. There is one mention about an entirely black Lion spotted in Tanzania in a book called My Pride and Joy, written by George Adamson in 1987.
So, you need not share this black lion photo, but can spread the information instead.
