Analysis:

The video that is supposedly caught on a GoPro cam went viral online, claiming to show a Man Fighting off a Great White Shark in Sydney Harbour. The video uploaded to YouTube by Terry Tufferson on 11 Jun 2014 claims to show a man leaping off the Jump Rock at Collins Beach, a notorious jumping spot in Manly, with a GoPro camera strapped to his head. When he comes to the surface, the man hears his friends shouting ‘shark’, before encountering the great white shark face-to-face. Although many believed the video could be real, there are certain aspects to prove it otherwise.

Flaws in the Video

In the video, after the man supposedly dives into water, when his friends shout ‘shark’, pointing a certain distant direction, you can see the shark close to the man in vicinity of his friend. Believing that a shark of that size would be fast enough to move that close so quickly is difficult. Also, the cool behavior of the man’s friend and that of the swimmer himself at the end of the video raises doubts about the authenticity of the incident. An encounter with a rare white shark of that size can certainly scare people.

Shown in the video above is another one uploaded to YouTube on the same day by Scott Mitchell, a photographer. In the shark encounter video titled “ALMOST” Great White Shark Attack – Newport Beach, Australia, you can see the footage of a man’s legs kicking away from a white shark and the shark moving away are the same in both cases. More importantly, an August 2013 report from Taronga Zoo says that Great White Shark sightings in Sydney Harbour are extremely rare; there’s only one reliable recorded sighting of a Great White inside the entrance to the Harbour that happened back in 1927. The report also states there are no recorded Great White shark attacks on humans in Sydney Harbour over the last 222 years.

To Conclude

The aforementioned flaws do not suggest the video is real; in fact the low quality 480 pixel video recording uploaded to YouTube, which is a low quality setting for a GoPro cam, makes it a bit difficult to identify the video editing/CGI. Most probably, two different footages of the shark and the diver are stitched together to fabricate the story of a man fighting off a great white shark attack in Sydney harbour. The reason behind making the video, however, is difficult to guess at this moment. In past, many such hoax videos were created for various purposes.
