Picture of Elephant Carrying Cub in Trunk Photoshopped

The heartwarming picture of elephant carrying a cub alongside lioness is doing rounds online since April 2018. Originally, Kruger Sightings shared the picture on their Twitter and Facebook accounts along with a similar story.

Because of the sensitive nature of the picture and the accompanying story, it went viral online soon. However, a close observation reveals the shadows in the picture are not consistent. Next day on 2nd April 2018, Nadav Ossendryver, who runs the Twitter account of Latest Kruger, clarified he shared the picture story as an April fool’s joke and it went super viral. Note, the description of the story ends with ‘Tinged by Sloof Lirpa‘. Tinged means color slightly and Sloof Lirpa is April fool’s spelled backwards. This was a hint suggesting the picture message is just an April fool’s prank.

The Photoshopped image was made using three different and unrelated pictures of Elephant, Lion and Cub. The image of Savanna Elephant is from Kruger National Park, South Africa going back to at least 2005. Image of Lioness from South Africa reserve is from 2012. Lastly, the picture of Cub Photoshopped into the elephant’s trunk is a flipped version of an image from Zoos Victoria.

Back in 2018, the April fools prank went viral and reached millions of viewers. It keeps surfacing again, also on some funny, meme websites.
