The invisible artwork is said to exist solely in the imagination of the artist and a picture that’s shared with the story claims to show a group of art enthusiasts staring at blank gallery walls, admiring Lana Newstrom’s paintings and sculptures at the Schulberg Gallery in New York. “Art is about imagination and that is what my work demands of the people interacting with it. You have to imagine a painting or sculpture is in front of you”, the artist seems to have said. A lot of people have fallen for this story, also because it was shared in many art and sports websites.

The picture and story originated from an article on CBC/Radio-Canada website (cbc.ca). The article is presented as a documentary to learn more about the 27-year-old artist Lana Newstrom who supposedly said she was the first artist in the world to create invisible art. However, a Google search of her name gives no credible results other than the original CBC report, and there is no ‘Schulberg Gallery’ in New York either.
Not Real
The fact of the matter is, the article on CBC comes from a Canadian radio show ‘This Is That’ which specializes in spoofs. The picture that comes with the story is actually an edited stock image (with exhibits removed) from a Phil Stern show in Milan, Italy back in 2010. The invisible art of Lana Newstrom is simply a hoax carried out by professional radio parodists Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring and hosts of This Is That, a current affairs program that ‘fabricates’ stories.
These days it has become difficult to say what is real and what is satire.
