Analysis:

The message comes with a video claiming to show a completely unspoiled dead body of a martyr who died 22 years back, in the Iran-Iraq war during 1980-1988. Claims are that the ‘Shaheed’ dead body was found recently while Iraq and Iran were exchanging the bodies of soldiers killed during war. Although Iran and Iraq are indeed exchanging the dead bodies of their soldiers over the years, the story portrayed through the video is not a fact. The message is a hoax.

Authenticity of Story

The video description says that the martyr who has been buried for 22 years is Shaheed Ali Jouzdani, as written on the coffin cover. The video shows fresh body in unspoiled clothes and clean white shroud cloth draped over the dead body. But any human dead body in general will decompose over time, especially when buried in soil. In this case, neither the body decomposed, nor his clothes and the shroud that covered him – they are not even blackened with soil or dirt. So it would be highly improbable that the body was buried in soil for 22 years.

Actual Facts

The person shown in the coffin is NOT Shaheed Ali Jouzdani, it is actually Hajj Mohammad Ebrahim Hemmat – a Iranian teacher who later became a popular military commander during the Iran-Iraq war. On 14 March 1984, Mohammad Ebrahim Hemmat was martyred during Operation Kheibar on Majnoon Island. Following his death, a grand funeral procession was organized and his body was buried in Martyrs Cemetery of Shahreza, his birth place. The video in the message in fact shows the same. You can refer to the pictures in image section below. The video was taken way back in 1984, that is why the low-quality recording. The language used in the video is Persian, so not many people understood it and went on to believe that it could be the 22 year old dead body of a ‘shaheed’, which is not the fact.

Meaning of Shaheed

Shaheed is a Quranic Arabic word meaning “witness”, and it is also used to denote a “martyr”. Martyr is used to bestow honor to the Muslims who have laid down their life fulfilling a religious commandment, or have died fighting/defending their faith, country or family.

It is the belief among people that Martyrs never die. But no where in Quran it is written that the dead bodies of the martyrs will not decompose with time. Therefore, the story that comes with the video is a hoax. It need not be shared.

Hoax or Fact:
