Analysis:
A story in wide circulation on social media states that for the first time in world history, the U.S national flag on White House was hoisted at half-staff in honor of former Indian President A.P.J Abdul Kalam. Several images and also some videos saying same were flooded on Facebook, Twitter and even WhatsApp. But no, the claim is not a fact.

On 21 July 2015 U.S President Obama ordered flags lowered to half-staff at all federal buildings in the U.S. and overseas, but it was in honor of the five troops killed in a shooting rampage in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to washingtonpost.com. The people’s President of India and Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam passed away on 27 July 2015. The Indian government declared a seven-day state mourning from 27 July 2015 to 2 August 2015, during which national flags across the country will be flown at half-mast and there will be no official entertainment, according to ptinews.com. There was however an official White House statement from the U.S President Obama expressing deepest condolences to the people of India on the death of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

The United States White House did not lower its flag to honor APJ Abdul Kalam; it is a hoax. There were also few pictures online falsely showing some other countries’ flags lowered down in memorial of Mr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
