Fake Thermocol Mattresses
A video (shown below) doing rounds on social media shows how fake mattresses are selling on roadside in Karimnagar, Telangana, India. People catch a person selling on vehicle what appear like ‘branded’ mattress. They tear open the mattress cover and – to their shock – see thermocol inside it instead of the regular foam and/or coir. The fake thermocol mattress is given well-known brand names of mattress companies using covers.
Scammers are selling such fake mattresses in rural areas, where people are unaware of it. Especially, the people traveling home to home on vehicles and on roadside are selling them. The cheap thermocol mattresses are sold for hefty prices to unsuspecting buyers. Sometimes, they are sold for cheap prices in the name of ‘discount’ offers. People involved in such scam sale are usually coming from other states. Earlier in April 2017, similar incident took place in Bhalla Farm village of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The villagers caught four people selling such fake mattresses with thermocol and handed them over to police.
Even in Some Shops
Incidents involving sale of such fake thermocol mattresses happened earlier in some shops as well. One incident occurred in December 2013 in a shop in Kochi, Kerala. The mattresses on sale contained inside thermocol, thin layers of some plastic and coir. Consumers were buying the fake mattresses under brand names for thousands of rupees. In that case, police closed the shop, arrested people involved and investigated into the matter.
So, beware of fake mattresses selling on roadside and make sure the branded ones you are buying from shops are also authentic.
