Analysis:
These emails, in various versions, tell the recipient that his email address has won huge sum of money in the ‘BBC ONE National Lottery’ or ‘BBC Lottery’ and then requests the recipient to claim his prize money by sending his personal information like full name, mobile number, occupation, age, income, mail address and others. The claims are not facts; these emails are scam!
It is a fact that there is the National Lottery in United Kingdom, which is state-franchised, and it is also a fact that there is an association between the BBC and the National Lottery. However, BBC is a broadcasting corporation, not a lottery company, and it is because of the association, BBC One broadcasts the drawing of the National Lottery in the United Kingdom. Scammers take advantage of this fact to mislead the less informed netizens. They lure people with prizes and lottery winning of huge amount of money – mentioning ‘BBC Lottery’ in their email and the BBC One website link to the National lottery program, to give them false credibility. ‘BBC Lottery’ as such does not exist.
These BBC lottery scam emails are only intended to initiate dialog with the potential victims, grab their personal details, and then steal money cleverly. The personal information shared can also be used for criminal purposes, including identity theft.
So when you receive these scam emails claiming you have won big money in BBC lottery, do not respond to them; just delete the emails. As you can see in related stories below, this type of scamming through lottery claims in emails are very common, and they use popular brand names. Remember that you can win a lottery only when it actually exists and if you bought yourself a ticket!
