Analysis:

A message circulating heavily on WhatsApp claims that Indian Telecom Company BSNL has Launched 4G ExPress service, wherein they are providing Free SIM Card with Unlimited Data, Voice Calls and SMS for one year period. To avail the offer, the users are asked to click through a link that comes with the message and enrol themselves. Do not get carried away with the Unlimited 4G claims, it is just a Scam!

We have seen the message has been doing rounds on WhatsApp in slightly different variants, coming with different links (some listed below) to register and avail the alleged 4G Unlimited offer from BSNL.

When we clicked through one of the links to check, we were asked to provide personal details and register for the offer. However, without even entering proper valid details, we were taken to next page wherein we were asked to send the message invite to 10 WhatsApp friends or groups. Once done, we were directed into installing their app and then were offered sponsored products.

BSNL has not launched any such unlimited 4G service, the message is designed by scammers to prey in and cash from unsuspecting users. The apps installed and sponsored can be Malwares that can harm your phone and the personal information you provide, along with those of your contacts from your phone can be stolen and misused. The website links that come with the messages are not official sources of BSNL, note some links have later been redirected to official BSNL home page bsnl.co.in.

Reliance Company in India has offered the Jio 4G services at cheap prices, following which other telecom operators have rolled out data plans at cheaper rates. As of this writing, BSNL plans to launch high-speed 4G services across six of its telecom circles. Taking advantage of this ‘data offer’ battle, scammers are coming up with lucrative false offers to target unsuspecting users. So we advise mobile users to be careful before clicking links that come with messages that sound too good to be true, it is always better to check the official company website to confirm whether or not the offer is genuine.
