According to a story spreading on WhatsApp, users in India can buy the Reliance Jio Unlimited 4G Internet and 3 months free calling service with a LYF Smartphone – all that for an incredible offer of – just 99 rupees. The story accompanies a clickable link where a website reliance.jio-4g.com is supposedly providing the offer for first 20,000 subscribers. As the Reliance Jio 4G service and LYF Smartphones are creating abuzz in India, many users actually believed in the offer which, as explained below, is not a fact.

Story Background about Reliance Jio 4G & LYF Smartphones

In an 18 July 2016 article, India Today website indiatoday.intoday.in explains about the Reliance Jio 4G & LYF Smartphones and the ways to get them. Jio employees were (are) given free unlimited data and voice-calling offer for three months on the Reliance Jio network, and others could get the Jio through the employee referral programme. Earlier in late June 2016, Reliance Communications introduced 10GB data at Rs 93 offer to Jio SIM users, as a promotional offer for few days. The offer was available in select circles for CDMA customers, who had upgraded to 4G, but was valid only for 30 days.

The claim in question, i.e. sale offer of Reliance Jio Unlimited 4G with LYF Smartphone at just 99 Rs, comes from reliance.jio-4g.com, a single, sales page website, with no official information about the product/service or that of the website/sellers. When we tested the Buy Now link on the website, we were asked to share our mobile number and email, before being asked to share the offer with 7 groups/friends on WhatsApp. Later we were asked to download and install an APK android application, from which we can book the LYF Smartphone with Reliance Jio Unlimited 4G Internet and 3 months free calling service. We did not install the app, but have seen users saying they received emails or SMS messages confirming their product booking.

Coming to the domain information of the sales website, JIO-4G.COM was registered in July 2016 for one year. While the registrant city is mentioned as Jakarta, there are no specific contact details apart from an email and a telephone no: +44.439933993, the country code +44 of which, belongs to United Kingdom. Moreover, no such mobile and 4G offer was mentioned anywhere in official websites of Reliance Industries Limited, Jio or LYF.
