Analysis:

These messages, in various forms, shared as SMSes on mobile and also on WhatsApp inform the recipients that they can earn a good amount of free mobile talktime by simply forwarding the SMS to 20 WhatsApp users. This they say is an offer coming from the company promoting their website mentioned in the SMS. Also coming with the message is a Hindi text in English saying the sender has tried the offer and found it to be true; that he has received free talktime after forwarding the SMS on WhatsApp. Unfortunately, this is not a fact!

We have seen such SMS messages circulating through mobiles in various forms, with various website links. You cannot get free talktime from those new website companies by simply forwarding an SMS to certain number of WhatsApp users. It’s very unlikely that they will have any such mechanism to track your number of forwarded messages and recharge your mobile with free talktime. Most certainly, these messages, perhaps originating from the website owners or someone related, are only meant to promote the website links and make their brands popular. WhatsApp has become a popular mobile networking platform, so scammers like this come with various ways to exploit the wide user reach. Moreover, sometimes, these messages may also carry malicious links that can download malware to your mobile if you are not careful while browsing.

So mobile users are advised not to believe in such free offers and waste their time on forwarding them on WhatsApp. It is not going to earn them any free talktime, rather, it is going to spam others and help the message go viral – supporting the scammer’s intention of promoting their website/brand/products.
