Like listed in the other versions section above, various stories shared through emails, Twitter, Facebook and now on WhatsApp as well, claim to show a video footage of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 found in Bermuda Triangle, Indian Ocean, or other Sea. The posts look like legitimate links to the said videos, some of which also say many of the passengers are still “alive” or “saved”. They circulate through social networking sites like Facebook requesting users to “Pray for MH370” or click “share” to access the videos. Beware of such claims; they are not authentic!

Pictures of Crashing Planes into Sea

The couple of pictures of Crashing Planes into Sea do not show the missing MH370 or any other Malaysian plane. The featured picture is actually US Airways Flight 1549 that was successfully ditched in the Hudson River after being disabled by striking a flock of Canada Geese during its initial climb out on 15 January 2009. The other picture seems to be the Lion Air jet plane that crashed into the sea as it tried to land on the Far Eastern holiday island of Bali. Some passengers suffered broken bones in this accident.

Scams!

These stories that come with catchy headlines like “Breaking” or “Shocking video” to grab people’s attention are in fact scams of cybercriminals trying to exploit people’s interest in the mysterious disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines plane MH370. There won’t be any such video claimed. The people who clicked these posts for watching the said videos were directed to marketing and promotional stuff like surveys, or installing rogue Facebook apps and other software that can be malicious. Scammers can also disguise an executable file as a video that, when clicked, allows them to steal user’s personal information and data from their computer/mobile device.

Status of Missing MH370

As of 11 March 2015, the MH370 Malaysian Airplane that vanished from radar screens less than an hour after departing Kuala Lumpur for Beijing on 8 March 2014 has been missing ever since. The Malaysian government declared the incident of Flight MH370 as an accident, with no survivors. Not a single piece of wreckage from it has been recovered.
