A message doing rounds on WhatsApp in various versions claims that the free messaging service has launched an ‘Ultra-Light Wifi’ feature to enjoy free 3G service. The message says that your mobile device supports the technology and you will not need an internet or data connection to run WhatsApp anymore. It says that all the user has to do is simply click and follow the link that comes with the message to access free 3G internet. As explained below, these unrealistic claims are not facts.
Once the user clicked the link that comes with the aforementioned message, he is taken to a suspect website that claims the user has to invite 10/15 friends before he can complete the activation and get the ‘free Wi-Fi’ service. Once that is done, the user is directed to third party advertisement sites that conduct surveys, and in some cases, the user’s personal information and log in credentials of social networking sites can also be stolen. Moreover, there are also chances of infecting your phone with malware. All this in the name of offering a free Wi-Fi service that does not exist. These messages are not associated with WhatsApp in any way; they are coming from cyber criminals who exploit the popularity of WhatsApp service and target unsuspecting users to earn big money. Earlier there was a similar hoax message that came as an invite to activate free WhatsApp without Internet. So do not click any such links that come with the aforementioned messages, and do not forward them to any of your friends, because that is how the scam spreads.
