WhatsApp Sold to Mukesh Ambani of Reliance, Scam Message
Fact Check:
Certain messages doing rounds on the popular messaging platform state WhatsApp is sold to Mukesh Ambani from Reliance Industries in India for $19 billion, and is now going to be controlled by him. Some versions of the message appear to come from ‘Director of WhatsApp’. They ask users to forward the message to more than 10 contacts to activate their new WhatsApp with Facebook services. Otherwise, the users are scared their account will be deleted from new servers. So, let us find out whether the claims are true.
Reliance Buys WhatsApp: Old Scam
These messages about Reliance buying WhatsApp have been in circulation since at least 2015, asking users to forward it to at least 10 friends or groups within 24 hours to activate the new service. The messages also carry with them a link, some versions saying you will get free talk time on mobile when you forward the message to more than 25 WhatsApp contacts.
Facebook bought WhatsApp in late 2014; not Reliance Company in India. The message in question is in fact a scam. When you click on the link accompanying the message, the scammers make money. Moreover, the click through process could also steal your private data and infect your phone with malware.
The scammers use the scare tactic saying if the person does not forward the message and click through the link, his WhatsApp account will be permanently deleted. The hoax message and scam also appear in several variants using the names of director or CEO of WhatsApp like John Sam, Jim Balsamic and others. So, we advise WhatsApp users not to click through the links and not to forward the scam to others.
