Fact Check:
A viral message shared heavily on WhatsApp warns citizens of an impending Earthquake in Indian Capital City, New Delhi. Accordingly, the American space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) warned about 9.1 Magnitude Earthquake to Hit Delhi in April 2018. The warning of the massive Earthquake is however not true and hoax.
No 9.1 Magnitude Earthquake to Hit Delhi
The message circulating on free messaging app WhatsApp states that NASA has warned a 9.1 or 9.2 magnitude Earthquake Will Hit Delhi between 7th and 15th of April 2018. The massive Earthquake covering various States in India will allegedly cause lacs of human deaths. The message mentions some precautionary steps amidst ‘impending danger’ and carries a ‘NASA’ website link for more details on the earthquake.
Firstly, as explained on United States Geological Survey website usgs.gov, it is not easy to predict an Earthquake. In fact, scientists across the world are still trying to find a solution to it. The message that comes in broken, erroneous English carries the link nasaalert.com, which as a matter of fact, is not NASA website nasa.gov. When we checked, the link redirected to alertsondemand.com (domain name changes) and it did not even open properly. More importantly, NASA did not give any kind of warning about ‘Delhi Earthquake’ – there is no information related to it. In India as well, there is not any official news about the Delhi Earthquake.
So, the NASA warning of 9.1 Magnitude Earthquake to Hit Delhi in April 2018 is a fake, hoax story. It garnered importance because of earlier reports stating the Number of Major Earthquakes around World Shall Increase in 2018. As explained in our article below, it was not entirely true.
