Fact Check:

Various stories, images and videos doing rounds online in past few years purport to show Ancient Man-Made Pyramids Found in Antarctica. Showing some satellite images as proof of the pyramids, people suggested some lost human civilizations created the rocky, pyramidal structures. It’s because Antarctica region did not support human life for millions of years. Some even went on to say the pyramids found in Antarctica are creations of some extra-terrestrial beings like Aliens. People do not know the mysterious formations, allegedly due to a conspiracy. These theories were even mentioned in some mainstream news outlets, which is how the story became popular. So, let us examine the claims and find out if the ‘man-made pyramids found in Antarctica’ are real or not.

Sources of Claim

Conspiracy theories about Antarctica Pyramids have been around for a while, linking them to Hidden Cities beneath and Alien access outside. At the beginning of August 2012, Before It’s News website beforeitsnews.com published an article titled “Melting Polar Ice Caps Reveal Antarctic Pyramids“. The article is from another website apparentlyapparel.com, which as a matter of fact, is a speculative theory – starting with the assumption – what if the plain ordinary mountains in Antarctica are Pyramids.

Again, in September 2012, Disclose TV website disclose.tv published an article with title “Unique Finding in Antarctica: Ancient Pyramids!” The article is reproduced from another website scienceray.com (taken down now). It mentions a team of explorers claiming that they have found evidence of at least three ancient man-made pyramids on Antarctica. Then mentions speculations around possibility of Antarctica being warm enough in past to have an ancient civilization living there. The article, notably, also mentions the team of explorers did not release much information on their discovery, adding a few pictures have leaked on the internet.

The discussion about pyramids in Antarctica appeared earlier in 2009 on Disclose TV website, in a forum post about pyramids around the world you have never seen. The forum is not available now.

Are Man-Made Pyramids Found in Antarctica?

In both cases above, the published theories and assumptions are – without any credible citation of scientific evidences, except for the images. Nonetheless, those reports appeared in different forms in alternative-news and conspiracy-theory websites. Some news outlets also reported about the man-made pyramids found in Antarctica.

The featured Google Earth image shows Schatz Ridge in Antarctica, which can be seen at the coordinates 79°58’39.2″S 81°57’32.2″W. The other picture of alleged pyramid in Antarctica can also be seen in an image taken by Gordon Wiltsie, an award-winning National Geographic photographer. Its description says – ANTARCTICA. Nunataks south of Vinson Massif in Ellsworth Mountains. Vast polar plateau in background (more about Nunataks later). Coming to the image allegedly showing a set of pyramids covered in Antarctica snow, the photograph comes from Flickr user Al Powers from Feb. 2008. In a comment, Al Powers mentions the usage of his photograph in the TV show “Ancient Aliens“. He also said they are just natural snow & ice formations and no one else on that trip saw or took a photo of them.

There’s another popular image allegedly showing a group of three pyramids covered with snow, compared to the three Egyptian pyramids lined up in Giza. The same location is also visible in a 2009 video from Antarctica posted by Australian climber Jarmila Tyrril. Again, there’s no mention about any mysterious pyramids back then.
