Analysis:

A story shared widely online along with a composite picture purports to show the before & now pictures of Conjoined Twins Separated by U.S. Republican Presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson back in 1987. It is a fact that Dr. Ben Carson separated the heads of conjoined twins in 1987, but shown in the picture are not them, or their grown up versions.

About the Famous Surgery to Separate Conjoined Twins

Dr. Ben Carson became popular in 1987 for being the lead neurosurgeon of a 70-member surgical team that separated conjoined twins Patrick and Benjamin Binder (born February 2, 1987) , who were joint at the back of the head. The separation surgery took place for 22-hour at Johns Hopkins Hospital (Maryland, United States) on 7 September 1987 when the twins were seven-months-old. Although the operation to separate the conjoined twins Patrick and Benjamin Binder was successful, the aftermath was complicated. Seven months after the surgery, the boys moved back to Germany with their parents and did not grow up well. A November 2015 article on The Washington Post website washingtonpost.com mentioned the boys’ mother Theresia’s brother Peter Parlagi saying Patrick Binder died sometime in the previous decade. And Benjamin Binder who was 28 then could still not speak.

The story about the picture became popular in early 2016, as it was even featured in a March 2016 article of Daily mail website dailymail.com.ng. But fact of the matter being, both the pictures of conjoined twins and that of grown up boys are not related to the famous surgery of Dr. Ben Carson in 1987.

Both Pictures Unrelated

The picture of two kids, i.e. conjoined twins, actually shows baby girls Tatiana and Krista Hogan-Simms, and was shared in 2007 to describe the young mother Felicia Simms confronted by the challenge of raising her twin daughters who are connected at the head. In this video describing the same, you can see the kids’ picture showcased in between (screenshot above). And for the two grown up boys, they are identical twins Cramer and Carson Gormley from Lake Fenton High School, Michigan, who were 18 years old at the time the photograph was taken and were mentioned in a 2008 blog blog.mlive.com.

So in short, the picture stories claiming to show the before & now pictures of conjoined Binder twins separated by U.S. Republican Presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson back in 1987 are hoaxes; the pictures do not show Binder twins and are not related to each other.

Hoax or Fact:
