Fact Check:

Some messages doing rounds on WhatsApp and also Facebook allege to show the first photographs of Earth sent by Chandrayan 2 mission of India. They appear to show various ‘beautiful’ and mysterious images of Earth captured from Space. These pictures also appeared in videos carrying similar descriptions. Nonetheless, the claims are not true – the actual details of the photographs are explained here.

About Chandrayaan 2 Mission

Chandrayaan-2 is India’s second lunar exploration mission developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The mission was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on 22nd July 2019 to land near the Lunar South Pole region. The main objective of the mission is to map the location and abundance of lunar water.

The first photograph is also shared online earlier with other descriptions like ‘Beautiful Earth shrouded in clouds, taken from the Hubble Telescope‘ and ‘Earth in her cradle of clouds saying Namaste‘. However, the picture is in fact a conceptual stock photograph of Earth, which seems to describe ‘Cold Earth’ as an illustration.

The above photograph is again an old one dating back to at least year 2014. It often appears online with description ‘Night Side of Earth‘ and its origins are unclear. It is certainly not any photograph of Earth coming from Chandrayan 2 mission.

This photograph shows Erupting Volcano captured from International Space Station (ISS). It shows a large plume of smoke, steam and ash erupting from the Sarychev volcano on the Kuril Islands of Russia.

The above image is not any real space photograph of Earth. It is also an old picture appearing online as Wallpaper.

This is again an old picture appearing as ‘Moon over Earth‘ and is not a real photograph. It is perhaps a Wallpaper creation. See the full image below.

The last photograph above is not real. It is cropped out from an illustrative stock picture showing ‘Planet earth with sunrise and moon in space‘.

So, the messages claiming to show a set of pictures as photographs of Earth from Chandrayan 2 mission in space are just hoaxes. Note, these messages are also doing rounds online with some other pictures of Earth not related to Chandrayan 2 mission.
