A set of pictures claiming to show a Giant Manta Ray caught by Peruvian fishermen have gone viral on the internet in the past few days. It was said that the giant manta ray was 26ft long and weighed one tonne. Yes, it is a fact.

The pictures showing giant manta ray in shore area were shared on Facebook by user Kelly Cruz Cumpen on 19 April 2015, where he said they were taken at Playa La Cruz Tumbes beach. During that weekend in mid-April, Fishermen in Peru indeed got a “big” surprise when a massive 1.1 tonne, 26ft long manta ray caught up in their net when they went for fishing on their wooden boat near Caleta La Cruz, off the country’s north-west coast. Unfortunately, when they pulled it out of the water it was dripping with blood and was dead.

So they thought of bringing the ray back, but since it was too heavy, they had to tie the manta ray to the side of the boat, bring it to shore and use a crane to lift. Shown in the video above is a brief news report on the unusual finding. Interestingly, in spite of their size, manta rays are largely docile and harmless to humans.

Hoax or Fact:

Fact.
