Fact Check:
A ‘scary’ video is popular on social media alleging to show a Massive Landslide on Guwahati-Shillong road. It is doing rounds on WhatsApp, Facebook and also Twitter among others. Although the video and the landslide causing accident are real, it is not from Guwahati-Shillong road or anywhere from India.
Not Video of Landslide from Guwahati-Shillong Road
Earlier, a story became popular online claiming to show Earth Crust Moving in Mongolia. However, it happened to be a Massive Landslide descending the town in Maierato Comune of Southern Italy.
The claims in question became popular since mid-May 2020. It was due to the Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan in the Bay of Bengal causing widespread damage over East India and Bangladesh. The video in question indeed shows a hill beside a road collapsing within seconds as a motor cyclist got nearly buried. Thankfully, he let go of his bike and managed to escape quickly at the right moment before his bike got buried in the dangerous landslide accident.
Landslide in Indonesia
To clarify the matter, the video is not from Guwahati, Shillong or anywhere from India. It in fact shows some shocking scenes of a landslide recorded along the Sukanagara-Pagelaran highway in West Java, Indonesia. The incident took place during afternoon hours of 9th April 2020. Below is a video showing another angle of the accident nearby residents recorded on mobile cameras.
At the time of landslide, officials received reports of burial of at least 2 people and 2 motor bikes. Another video below shows a longer version of the landslide accident.
