Bizarre dragon like sea creature discovered on New Zealand beach
Fact Check:
A strange picture in circulation online purports to show a Mysterious Dragon-like Creature Found on New Zealand Beach. It is a fact the bizarre sea creature was discovered on New Zealand beach back in early 2016, but it is not any dragon as such. It actually shows the remains of a Smooth Skate.
About the Dragon-like Creature Found on New Zealand Beach
In early 2016, Veterinarian Maria Lombard was walking near her home near Waitarere Beach (New Zealand), when she found the strange remains of sea creature. It washed upward on a shoreline, creating a mystery in the neighborhood because the Veterinarian herself did not see anything like that. The creature measuring around 2.08m had big serpent-like head and long back bone.

After her find, Maria Lombard shared pictures of the strange creature on her Facebook account and said it looked quite a bit like Dragon. Viewers also suggested it could be a magical/mythical creature. To inquire about the sea creature, Maria also sent couple of pictures of her discovery to Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand. The creature, however, is nothing magical or dragon-like. On 10th February 2016, Te Papa revealed on Twitter the remains were the brain case and vertebrae of a Smooth Skate with scientific name Dipturus innominatus.

Like the one below, Smooth Skate is a long and wide sea creature, possessing wing-like sides. It is widespread throughout New Zealand waters, can dive deep, and interestingly, can live for more than 24 years.
