Analysis:

Few pictures doing rounds online since at least April 2015 claim to show fish poured like rain from sky over the streets of Thailand and that it is a sign of Apocalypse. Some other versions of the story said the fish rain occurred in China and there were also some videos showing the pictures with same claims. Although the photographs are real, the fish rain claims, however, are not facts.

The pictures in question became popular online after few online reports carried the pictures with the same story about fish rain in Thailand streets. They said that most of the cat fishes were found dead and even went on to discuss the scientific reasons behind the fish rain.

Actual Fact

In March 2015, a truck carrying 6,800 kilos of cat fish spilled the fishes along a road in the Kaili Development Zone of Guizhou province in China when its door swung open accidentally. It is thought the door was opened up when the truck drove over a bump in the Kaili area. But thanks to a few determined firemen, some extra-long hoses and local residents’ help; the fish supply did not go to waste. They were rescued and eventually reloaded onto the truck. You can see a brief coverage of the incident in the video. It looks like few photographs from the incident were first published in People’s Daily Online website in China fj.people.com.cn in mid March 2015, where the report said the accidental scattering of the catfish along the road turned it into an instant ‘pond’.

So the stories saying the photographs show fish rain in Thailand streets and is a sign of Apocalypse are hoaxes; they actually show an accidental scattering of fish on a Chinese street from a supply truck carrying the fishes.
