The story is fact. The pictures are genuine, Parrot flowers do exist, although they are rare. They belong to Impatiens psittacina (meaning parrot like) species that are rarely found in parts of Thailand, Burma and parts of India. It is called parrot flower as it resembles a parrot in flight when viewed from side angle.
