Fact Check:

Various stories doing rounds online claim Puri Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati’s Vedic Mathematics significantly contributed to Chandrayaan 2 lunar mission of India. They say the Puri Seer imparted Vedic Maths formula to ISRO, helping in the successful launch of Chandrayaan 2. No, the claims are not true; Puri Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati did not impart Vedic Mathematics for Chandrayaan 2 mission.

Origin of Claims

On 22nd July 2019, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully launched the Chandrayaan-2 lunar mission. Apart from global applaud, the Puri Seer Nischalananda Saraswati also praised the efforts of ISRO and the scientists associated with the mission. Consequently, some online portals and media outlets reported ISRO scientists took inputs from the Puri Seer to perfect Chandrayaan-2 launch. They said ISRO scientists consulted him in July 2019 before the mission launch to sort out some issues and doubts based on Vedic Mathematics. They, however, rightly said Nischalananda Saraswati has expertise in Vedic mathematics.

Nischalananda Did Not Impart Vedic Mathematics for Chandrayaan 2 Mission

Nischalananda Saraswati is the 145th Shankaracharya of the Govardhan monastery since 1992. He studied Vedas, Upanishads, Sciences, Mathematics deeply and other significant ancient texts of India. Nischalananda Saraswati is also a Vedic Mathematician and a scholar who authored some books on the basis of Vedic Mathematics.

Coming to the claims in question, Aajtak.in team contacted high level sources at the Govardhan monastery to find out facts. They said scientists do come to meet the Shankaracharya of Puri, Nischalananda Saraswati. But no scientists came from ISRO with regard to Chandrayaan 2 mission. However, earlier in November 2016, Nischalananda Saraswati visited ISRO’s Ahmedabad center and presented a lecture. He spoke on Space concept, its calculation on ancient India and importance and application of Vedic mathematics in it.
