Analysis:

An incredible video footage widely shared online claims to show a ‘Super’ Bee Pulling out a Nail out of a Brick wall, displaying amazing strength. The video showing Bee taking out nail out of the wall is in fact real, but with some information missing, which is described below.

Shown in the Video

As seen in the video, the tiny insect burrows into the brick to loosen the nail from the wall and push it out. During the feat, the Bee seems to give up twice, but succeeds in the third attempt to dislodge the nail entirely from the wall. The hard work of the Bee was caught on camera by a man in England, but as many might have thought, the tiny insect is not Honey Bee, but a Mason Bee. Unlike Honey Bees, Mason Bees live alone and do not form colonies. They get their ‘Mason’ name from their use of mud in building their nests. And notably, most mason bees are readily attracted to live in nesting holes of reeds, paper tubes, nesting trays, or drilled blocks of wood.

Missing Information

The video was originally shared on Facebook by Chris Downer Downes back in April 2011 with the description, “A solitary mason bee pulling a nail out of a hole in the wall! Incredible“. However, in a comment, Downer explained the backdrop of the incident that happened when they noticed the bees were going in and out of the hole. He said that he put a nail inside the hole thinking “that will stop him,” but 5 minutes later the bee took out the nail. Downer popped the nail back in and caught the incident on camera. It means, as many might have thought, the nail was not hammered into the brick wall; it was just stuffed into an already existing hole of the Mason Bee. Nonetheless, the crafty insect was still amazing at the feat.
