Analysis:

Few pictures that went viral on WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms claim to show that a huge Flying Saucer, also known as UFO (unidentified flying object) was spotted hovering over Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh state of India. Let us analyze whether the said claims are really facts are if it is just another hoax.

The pictures floating around internet, especially in India, supposedly show a huge flying saucer that was reportedly sighted hovering over Padri market of Gorakhpur on 28 November 2015. Interestingly, there were also some media reports about the huge disc-shaped flying object, along with speculations that the same UFO was spotted in Kanpur and Lucknow as well. It is said that Rinku, a local resident and the eye-witness of the incident was clicking picture of a truck-hit electric poll, when he witnessed the huge, white colored object rotating on its own. It is also said that the huge, paranormal sighting created panic amongst the locals in the market, while Rinku managed to click the pictures.

Actual Facts

After the pictures went viral, the district administration in Gorakhpur dismissed the rumors of UFO being spotted, saying it was just another hoax. They also mentioned that in past few months, the same object was (falsely) reported to have been found in Lucknow and Kanpur as well.

In Image Gallery (the first four pictures), you can see the ‘UFO’ is captured from different angles, but it still remains subjectively horizontal. Moreover, in next four pictures of Image Gallery, you can see the ‘Independence Day-like mother ship’ appearing in several other pictures, supposedly sighted in Brazil, China and other places. The original picture of the Flying Saucer (UFO), as a matter of fact, is simply a piece of 3D computer artwork created by Jukka Korhonen from Finland in 2006. The picture (ninth one in Image Gallery) was titled “V for Victory,” because Jukka is a fan of that television series.

Another UFO Story

According to another story that became popular in India around same time as the one above, a huge UFO was supposedly filmed flying over the clouds of Gorakhpur, from an Airplane window on 16 November 2015 (last picture in Image Gallery). Again, few media outlets reported these claims along with the video shown in this article.

The video originated from YouTube channel of SECTION 51 on 16 November 2015 with a title ‘HUGE UFO over India filmed from Airplane window – Nov 2015 !!!‘ and a link to their article on section51-ufo.com. You can clearly see in the video, the audio goes silent first, as if something is going to happen, and then the screen goes dark, before an ‘unclear’ sighting of the claimed UFO is shown. Lack of reaction from any passengers on the airplane after seeing the ‘UFO’ also raises questions about the authenticity of the video. Yes, the claim in the video is a hoax; SECTION 51 posts many false UFO stories online, one past story debunked in our article said a UFO attacked a Taliban base in Afghanistan.

In short, no UFO was sighted in Gorakhpur market, or from any airplane in India, the hoax stories are either a part of humor or online promotion.
