Analysis:

A video doing rounds online since November 2016 purports to show a Spectacular footage of a UFO flying past the Beaver Moon, the largest Supermoon. As explained below, the flying object transiting the Supermoon is not a UFO.

Origin of Story

On 14 November 2016 YouTube user David McCarty uploaded the video in question he said he shot while filming the November 2016 Supermoon. While reviewing the video in full screen, McCarty said he noticed he had caught a “UFO” passing in front of the Supermoon! From 0:53 seconds into the video you can notice a small and thin object passing along the bottom of the lunar disc. Few days later on 23rd November UK’s Daily Star website dailystar.co.uk reported the story saying an ‘Alien spaceship’ was spotted whizzing past Supermoon in shock UFO footage. The UFO story became popular and also sparked a debate about the existence of alien spaceships.

Actual Facts

We have seen the Daily Star publication sometimes comes up with somewhat exaggerated stories like the Biggest Supermoon in November 2016 was to ‘to spark huge tidal waves and massive earthquakes’ and Woman discovers terrifying reason she can’t sleep at night after watching bedroom cam. The YouTube user David McCarty thought he had caught a “UFO,” a paranormal entity, for which there is no solid existential proof as of this writing. Note, there is no credible media coverage of the story or investigations into the alleged UFO passing Supermoon.

The distant filming of the Supermoon does not show the flying object clearly, but there are certainly other plausible explanations for the object flying across the lunar disc. It might be some kind of Satellite, it could be a bird in long flight, a commercial plane, or a secret military jet kind of plane; considering the exhaust kind of appearance distorting the moon light at either ends, as the object passes. Note, the last picture of the Supermoon in August 2014 shows a plane passing by, which closely resembles what we see in the current ‘UFO’ video.

So considering the aforementioned facts, it is clear, the claim that the video shows a UFO flying past the Supermoon of November 2016 is a hoax; what we see is most probably a jet plane flying across the Moon.
