The Thailand woman, Duangjay Samaksamam, from Surin Province has hands each weighing almost one and a half stone (about 9.5 kg), and is thought to have the world’s biggest hands.

About Duangjay Samaksamam

Fifty nine years old Duangjay Samaksamam has been suffering from an extremely rare and painful affliction for more than 50 years, which leaves her limbs permanently swollen. Experts think she is the only person in the world to suffer the rare condition Macrodystrophia Lipomastosa from shoulder to fingers on both arms. Sadly, simple tasks like moving, washing and combing her hair are extremely difficult for Duangjay. Embarrassed by her condition, she used to avoid people, skip school and hide in the family home for the first 20 years of her life. Then she was forced to take over their family grocery shop and earn a living for her elderly parents. Describing about her condition, Duangjay said, “My hands are so heavy I can barely lift them to comb or shampoo my hair, it’s very difficult. Getting dressed is also very difficult and painful. Some doctors said the only solution was to cut off my hands if I wished to walk around freely. But I don’t want to do that.”

Medical Condition

The rare condition has caused vast build-up of fat deposits distributed across Samaksamam’s arms and hands. Medics all over the world have tried to decrease the swelling but, as of this writing, none have succeeded. Doctors tried to remove the excess fat and blood out of her hands, but after a month it just grew back. Then a doctor from Kitasato University in Japan performed MRI scans and discovered Duangjay Samaksamam was suffering from Macrodystrophia Lipomatosa, a rare, congenital form of localized gigantism of fingers or toes. However, according to Plastic surgeon Dr. Eiju Uchinuma, Duangjay is the first and only person in the world who has Macrodystrophia Lipomatosa from shoulders to her fingers on both arms. He also says that the mystery of her disease makes it incurable. Shown in the video is a brief report on Duangjay Samaksamam’s condition.
