Fact Check:
The warning message claims there’s a drug circulating in the form of strawberry flavor chocolate candies, called as Strawberry Quick or Strawberry meth which is deadly for children. Allegedly, crystal meth drug is rocked up with strawberry flavor. Although there is grain of truth in it, the warning message is not accurate.
About the Drug Warning in Strawberry Quick Candies
Meth, short form of Methamphetamine is a psychostimulant recreational drug which is some times used for its euphoric and stimulant properties by some people. In early 2009, Arkansas police (located in southern region of USA) has discovered that some people are using ‘Strawberry Quick’, which is a powdered mix to give the drug a pink color and make it sweet, to make the harsh tasting chemical more palatable. The colored crystal meth did resemble strawberry candy.
The police believed that traffickers and other drug sellers can mask this harmful drug as Strawberry candies and target potential people including youngsters. This was the only concern about this drug warning. Children were not specifically targeted with these pink candies meth. There weren’t any serious reports about kids being targeted with such candies of meth. In fact, the U.S government introduced legislation to penalize the drug dealers who market candy-flavored meth to children. The number of methamphetamine reports in US also dropped since then.
This warning became significant because of the media attention about strawberry flavored meth. It is a fact that drug dealers in the past have been marketing meth using such flavoring techniques, but probably they are not specifically targeting kids. More so, because children in general do not have the money to purchase such costly candies. Note, such drug warning messages about Strawberry Quick also accompanied some unrelated, disturbing images of harm caused in children.
So, the exaggerated warning about strawberry quick in this message is a hoax. However, as a safety measure, it is good for the parents to educate their children about the issue.
