Fact Check:
Various messages doing rounds on WhatsApp and other social media platforms claim Government is Spraying Medicine for COVID-19 in Air at Night hours. So, the messages in different languages request residents not to come out of house after 10 pm till next day 5 am. Some versions also mentioned military Helicopters will spray Pesticide medicines to kill the deadly strain of Coronavirus, COVID-19. No, the claims are not true and explained here.
No Government Spraying Medicine in Air to Kill COVID-19
The messages in circulation request people not to come out of their house after 10 pm till next day 5 am, saying officials will be spraying medicine in the air in order to kill the COVID-19. Some also go on to suggest people not to keep any kind of clothes or food items on building terraces in those night hours. Then they ask readers to forward the message to others. Again, there are no credible reports to authenticate the claims.
One version of the message mentioned BBMP (i.e. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) doing it. However, on 18th March 2020, BBMP Mayor of Bengaluru, M Goutham Kumar clarified there is no such directive from BBMP. Further, he told people not to fall prey to rumors and Call 104 for any help.
Another version of the message doing rounds in Telugu language mentions Oman government spraying pesticides in air to kill COVID-19. Again, National Crisis & Emergency Management Authority of UAE (NCEMA) denied spraying pesticides in the sky of the country as part of the precautionary measures to prevent Coronavirus. The Ministry of Health quashed the rumors, saying there will be no such operations. UAE government also warned people against spreading false information about the Coronavirus outbreak, adding it is a punishable crime.
To Conclude
So, the messages claiming government is spraying medicine in air during night hours to kill COVID-19 are hoaxes. Looks like, the actual intent of them to tell people to stay indoors. As a matter of fact, amidst COVID-19 outbreak, many Governments across the world have advised residents to stay indoors and stay safe. Some companies in IT and other sectors also allowed employees to work from home. The idea is not to allow the virus spread further as governments and medical experts are working to contain and treat/cure it.
