A picture message doing rounds on social media in different languages alleges to show Sabarimala IG Sreejith Crying and Repenting in front of Lord Ayyappa for his mistake. IG Sreejith faced criticism after he led a police escort taking two women into Sabarimala temple after Supreme Court verdict. The age-old tradition of Sabarimala barred the entry of menstruating women between the age of 10 and 50 years. The photograph of IG Sreejith shedding tears in front of Lord Ayyappa inside the Sabarimala temple is real. However, the reason behind it is not clear.
Protests in Sabarimala
Protests in Sabarimala started after the Supreme Court verdict in September 2018 allowed entry of women of all ages into the temple. The row became tense in October 2018 after opening the Sabarimala temple post the Supreme Court order. Several people, devotees and organizations started protesting against the Supreme Court verdict. Kerala Police drove away the protesters and resorted to lathi charge in some occasions. Some protesters opposed women visiting Sabarimala area in public transport vehicles, also attacking and damaging the vehicles. On the other hand, some police officers destroyed vehicles in Sabarimala.
During the row, the Crime Branch Inspector General of Police, S Sreejith led a heavy police escort taking Hyderabad-based journalist Kavita Jakkal and Malayali activist Rahana Fathima in police gear to reach the 18 holy steps of the shrine. The senior officer said he is doing everything the law says and requested protesters to follow court order. On the other hand, the priests asked them to respect the age-old tradition and leave the temple. The women and police backed off after priests inside the temple protested against their darshan. Subsequently, IG Sreejith faced stiff criticism from some quarters.

Later on, IG Sreejith, a Hindu and believer of Lord Ayyappa went for his darshan on 17th October 2018. The photograph showing him teary eyed went viral back then with similar stories. The photograph showing IG Sreejith shedding tears offering prayers in front of Lord Ayyappa in Sabarimala temple is real. However, the reason for it is not clear. When Outlook website outlookindia.com asked the IG to comment on his photograph, he refused and said, “It was a very personal act of mine”. While worshipping the deity in Sabarimala, Pious devotees are often seen with misty eyes or crying out loud.

On the other hand, another Christian officer Manoj Abraham was also criticized and accused of leading an unprovoked lathi charge against devotees in Pamba and Nilakkal. Subsequently, there were many messages on social media and WhatsApp groups criticizing the two Inspector Generals of Police – Sreejith and Manoj Abraham. In response, state Director General of Police Loknath Behera warned action would be taken against those attacking the senior officer(s) based on religion. Even the Chief Minister of Kerala expressed similar opinion about such messages.
