Fact Check:
An interesting video is viral online alleging to show a Monkey Flying a Kite on the terrace of a house amid COVID-19 lockdown. It grabbed wide attention of netizens, causing them surprise and delight at the same time. What you see in the video is real, but as such the claim saying Monkey is flying the kite is not true.
About the ‘Monkey Flying Kite’ Video
On 16th April 2020, IFS officer Susanta Nanda shared the video on Twitter calling it ‘Evolution’ due to lockdown, adding it is a monkey for sure. The short video shows the monkey pulling down the string of a kite flying in sky and probably tearing or playing with the kite later. A group of people can be heard shouting and laughing at the unusual sight.
After the video became viral on social media, some viewers commented it is Rise of the planet of the apes, becoming reality soon. Others hinted to the lockdown period saying ‘Monkey flying kites, Humans in the caves’.
Not Flying Kite As Such
The video viral online is only around 12 seconds long and does not show the complete scenario of the unusual incident. Monkeys are good at imitating humans, but it is unlikely the monkey was flying the kite by itself. Most likely, the monkey was pulling down a kite some human flew. Somehow, it caught hold of the string probably during a kite fight or otherwise. Note, there’s another kite flying in the sky nearby. The shouting and laughing of the people in the video is perhaps the aftermath of such a scenario. A Facebook user ‘Vijay Dixit Rti Activist Bikaner’ shared the video earlier on 12th April. In description, he said the monkey got hold of a cut kite and brought it down pulling its string.
While some accompanying messages say the video is from India, the location of the incident is unclear as of this writing. Nonetheless, the video grabbed attention of many netizens and entertained them during the lockdown period. On the other hand, amid the Coronavirus lockdown in India, some wild animals are coming into residential areas. Earlier, a small Indian Civet appeared walking on a main road.
