Fact Check:

An interesting video is circulating online alleging to show Muslim Women Singing Ram Bhajans in a Dubai Mosque. It also appears to show their sheikh husbands applauding and joining them in singing Hindu bhajans. The incident in the video is described as an inspiring sight of religious harmony, peace and mutual respect for each other’s faith. The claims however are mixture of hoax and facts explained here.

Popular Claim, Muslim Women Singing Hindu Bhajans

The unusual video appeared widely on WhatsApp, various social media and video sharing platforms. The claims saying the Muslim women are singing Ram bhajans in a Dubai mosque appeared online earlier also and have been around since 2012. However, like mentioned in the stories, the incident is not from any Dubai Mosque.

Not from any Dubai Mosque

The video in question carries a watermark of radiosai.org, which is in fact a website broadcasting and sharing various programs of Sri Sathya Sai Media Foundation. In contrast to the claims, the video is from Prasanthi Nilayam, the main ashram of the spiritual guru Sathya Sai Baba in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Cultural Event

On 10th July 2012, Sathya Sai Baba’s ashram organized a cultural event called “sarva dharma swaroopa sai” showing an Arabian choir. According to the Ashram, Region 94 of the Sai Organization comprising the countries from Middle East and Gulf participated and provided an Arabic flavor in Prasanthi Nilayam. As a matter of fact, the programme started with the group of women and men singing Arabic songs followed by Hindu Bhajans about Ram, Hari Narayana, Krishna, Ganesh and others. You can see the four minute length video is in fact cut and edited from the event, starting at timeframe just before 44 minutes.

Interestingly, we also found another, similar video of devotees from Middle East Countries offering music at Prasanthi Nilayam in 2014. Men and women gathering – dressed in Hindu traditional style – rendered Islamic songs like ‘Allah ho‘ and ‘La ilaha il Lalla‘. See video below from timeframe 20 minutes.

People from different religions and nationalities often come together in Puttaparthi. Together, dressed alike in traditional way, they all chant Vedas, singing bhajans, Christmas carols and Sufi songs. So, it is likely, there are also some people of other faith among the burqa-clad Muslim women and Sheikh men. Nonetheless, the cultural events promote oneness among everyone – to love all and serve all.
